The most beautiful prehistoric site in Belgium, rare and protected, the Caves have yielded exceptional remains from all prehistoric cultures: Ice Age animals, prehistoric dogs, Neanderthals, and Cro-Magnon people have left their traces here. Some of the most beautiful prehistoric artworks from Belgium have been discovered in these caves. A new multimedia and sensory tour is available, guided by a professional. There is also a lovely 10 km walk, “Le Pachis,” starting from the Caves.

 ▶ Mes aventures d’enchanteur (Digital Treasure Hunt) – 5KM from the gîte

Interactive Walk in Gesves via Your Smartphone: Mes Aventures d’Enchanteur offers fun and interactive walks for children aged 5 to 12 that transport you into a magical world full of puzzles and games to solve, using a free app called “Mes Aventures d’Enchanteur.”

The adventure begins near the church of Gesves, along Chaussée Gramptinne. The route, approximately 2.5 km long, allows you to explore the heart of the old village of Gesves, including its castle, chapel, and stream.

 ▶ Les sentiers d’Art – 5KM from the gîte

13 km through a variety of landscapes and unusual artworks, such as strangely living tree trunks, a cathedral of light, and a magnificent bird that jingles with the wind. Departure: Tourist Office of Gesves. Difficulty: Easy.

▶ Near Mozet (6 km from the gîte) and Crupet (15 km from the gîte) – Two of the Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia:

  • Mozet : This classified village has retained a medieval charm with its limestone houses and slate roofs, central church, and imposing farms that evoke a feudal era. One of these, the Royer Farm, houses a classified Romanesque tower. Mozet is traversed by the tranquil Tronquoy stream and surrounded by meadows, groves, and gardens that add to its appeal. The Château de Mozet, built of limestone blocks and dating from the second half of the 17th century, has been converted into a holiday center. A 4 km interpretive trail with educational panels will guide you through the village.
  • Crupet : Here you can discover a fortified house from the 13th century (an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia), the Church of Saint-Martin (11th-12th centuries) with its Romanesque tower of medieval origin (a listed monument), and the famous Saint-Anthony of Padua Cave (a listed site). The village also features numerous old mills, oil mills, paper mills, foundries, and breweries situated along the streams.

▶ Educational Walks en the Woods at Courrière – 7.5 KM from the gîte

48 hectares of woods with 3 marked walking trails (approximately stroller-friendly): 1.6 km (green markers), 2.3 km (blue markers), and 2.8 km (red markers). The trails are complemented by 40 bilingual French-Dutch educational panels, arboretum-type signs, or those focused on biodiversity. There is also a VITA trail offering physical exercises to stay fit, and a shared barbecue area with 5 covered picnic spots (48 seats) and a picnic table accessible to wheelchairs.

▶ Modave Castle – 28 km from the gîte

Built in the Middle Ages, Modave Castle was restored and given a classical façade, transforming it into an elegant pleasure residence with gardens that enhance its charm. Visitors can explore over 25 rooms with multilingual audio guides. There is also an explanatory film about Vivaqua’s water capture systems. A picnic area is available in the former stables, and marked walking trails start from the heart of the nature reserve.

Celles Castle, also known as Château de Vêves, is a classified exceptional monument and one of the most remarkable examples of 15th-century military architecture. Located just 10 minutes from Dinant, it proudly overlooks a beautiful valley. The castle is charming inside as well: still inhabited by the same family, it is fully furnished. Known as the “Sleeping Beauty’s Castle,” it is sure to delight both children and adults!
